ROLE CONFLICT AND ROLE TAKING
INTRODUCTION:-
It is an established fact that an individual is a part of social groups. As a result, it is understandable that certain social groups are always going to remain at loggerheads with each other due to the social scenarios, events, culture, nationality, ethnicity etc. Thus, there is also going to be conflict in the roles that an individual has in various groups. I myself am no exception to this social phenomenon. I therefore shall try to describe the experiences of role conflict and role taking.
MY EXPERIENCES WITH ROLE CONFLICT:-
Before talking about role conflict, I would like to emphasize on the fact that I am a part of various social groups such as my family, my college assignment group, my nationality as an Indian and a citizen if this world. The role conflict that I shall be mentioning in this blog would be in relation with these social groups only.
ROLE CONFLICT:-
Role conflict can basically be defined as a clash between the assigned roles of an individual in different groups. There have been several instances in my life wherein, my obligations towards various groups have propelled me to take decisive action. Some of my examples of role conflict are as follows:-
1. During the time of December 2021, I was given an assignment of Great books wherein, i was the part of my group in the group assignment. At that time itself I also had to go to a wedding in the city of Gandhinagar which was a social role of a cousin brother that I had to play. That was a time when I also felt that it is practically impossible to complete all the obligations at the same time. I had to cancel the plan of going to the wedding because in my priority list, the grading for that assignment was more important.
2. During the period of the lockdown in the initial phase, there was a lack of household workers in my house. As a result, I had to serve my role in the family as a cleaner of dishes and the floor. At that time, I understood that it is of utmost importance to understand the expansionary form of roles in contingency situations.
ROLE TAKING:-
Role taking is basically assuming the responsibilities in the accomplishment of tasks. It is not necessary that an individual completes the roles that are assigned to him. However, it almost certain that in any group without assigning the goals, work cannot be accomplished. I have observed that if an individual wants to assume more responsibilities then, he/she is seldom stopped from doing so. It is because, initiative is always encouraged in a rational group.
For example, if we talk about my family then; I have taken certain roles that were not supposed to be completed by me. When my grandfather was hospitalized, i took the initiative of looking after the affairs of the house as my parents were occupied in going to the hospital. This experience taught me the power of role taking as my social boundaries widened due to taking this role.
CONCLUSION:-
Thus, it can be concluded that role taking and role conflict are the two sides of that same coin. Till the time, an individual would remain a part of two or more groups; he/she will always be in a conflict with one group or another. Thus, a genuine effort should be taken in order to have a rational approach in prioritizing various social groups in order to minimize and rationalize conflicts.
